Understanding the complexity of skin structure and factors contributing to the skin aging will help us impede the aging process. Induction of degradative enzymes and the abundant production of reactive oxygen species lead to skin aging.

Aging occurs in every layer of the skin, primarily due to the degradation of its components. Many of its functions include temperature regulation, immunity from microorganisms, maintaining electrolyte balance, and protection from physical injuries, chemical agents and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It treats gender like a costume in all the worst ways.Skin is the largest and most visible organ of the body. I was waiting for Danny as the voice of queer experience to correct Lance’s ignorance, but the misgendering actually continues for the rest of the book. There is a cringeworthy story about Lance being turned on by a stripper that he says “turned out to be a man”. Worst of all, I’m not sure that the author understands the differences between trans women, drag queers, genderqueers, and effeminate cis men and the result is a confusing transmisogynistic mess. What is Lance really attracted to? How does he feel about that besides scared of loosing his football career? Also his attraction to Danny’s gender variance is dropped about halfway through. Is he gay? Is he bi? It seemed unrealistic that Lance gets all turned on for Danny because he wears a women’s coat and some eyeliner.

Meanwhile Lance, the ‘meathead jock’ would be far more interesting but his character is painfully underdeveloped. It gets a bit tedious to be constantly in the head of such a walking cliche, the overly theatrical drama queen theatre major. Danny is also a very unreliable narrator, prone to theatrics and hissy fits. He’s grown up surrounded by queer people since his father is an actor, and has no internal or external difficulties in his life. Danny is openly gay and openly effeminate but otherwise, pretty boring. Which is probably the least interesting side of the story to have. To begin, the book is written in first person and as such, we only get Danny’s side of the story. Plan B also seems to take place in the magical land where the word bisexual doesn’t exist.

The sexy scenes feel perfunctory, the romance never gels, and the text has huge problems with transmisogyny. Plan B by SJD Peterson is one of those books. Sometimes you find a book that just doesn’t work.
